Jarvis

Jarvis

Last night Jarvis kicked off the Looking Rough at 30 tour in Sheffield (where else?) to celebrate 30 years of Rough Trade Records. He came on stage looking like a Geography teacher, complete with tweed suit, beard and a cane for pointing at his carefully prepared powerpoint. Songs were interspersed with mini lectures about Rough Trade, Sheffield, meeting attractive women in museums etc. Not many frontmen could get away with this, but of course Jarvis did.

After all these years I was expecting a more subdued stage presence from Jarvis. But his new material is loud and vital and he was just as he’s always been – angular with twitchy staccato movements, never standing still. He’s all about elbows, knees and knuckles in triangles, squares and stars.

After two encores, Jarvis suddenly disappeared from the stage and popped up moments later in the DJ booth to play some records. After some initial hesitation, what remained of the crowd had a little dance with Jarvis shouting words of encouragement. What better way to end a gig than with a Jarvis Disco!

Jeffrey Lewis supported and performed this tribute to Rough Trade, so I shall leave you with that:
